ABOUT THE COUNTRYMAN PRESS

As Vermont's oldest name in publishing, The Countryman Press maintains a tradition of producing books of substance and quality. The company began in Taftsville, Vermont, in 1973 in Peter and Jane Jennison's farmhouse kitchen. In 1996 we became a division of W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., the country's oldest and largest publishing house owned by its employees. The Countryman Press retains its own identity with editorial and production offices in Woodstock, Vermont.

We publish about 70 books per year and currently have more than 350 books in print. The subjects of our books include travel, food, gardening, country living, nature, New England history, and crafts.

Our flagship Explorer's Guide travel series has sold more than half a million copies, and enjoys both critical and customer acclaim. We also have a wide variety of books on outdoor sport activities, including fishing, cycling, walking, and paddling. Our best-selling 50 Hikes series has sold more than 1 million copies. Another successful series is our Great Destinations travel guide series, which covers destinations from Napa Valley to the Jersey Shore and beyond the borders of the U.S. to places like Hawaii and Costa Rica.

Recent Countryman projects have included the publication of The King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion, which won the James Beard Foundation's 2004 KitchenAid Cookbook of the Year. The book has also received rave reviews from the New York Times, Boston Globe, Saveur, People, Amazon.com, Chocoaltier, and many others. We also publish EatingWell magazine's cookbooks filled with the principles of healthy eating and award-winning recipes (please click Food & Cooking on the navigation bar at the left).

Other popular books include The Green Mountain Spinnery Knitting Book, The Colors of Fall: A Celebration of New England's Foliage Season, and Hudson River Journey.

Our continuing goal is to publish books of the highest quality that take the reader where they want to go. Our books are promoted and sold to bookstores and to specialty markets throughout the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world.
