American Utopias

Charles Nordhoff
Foreword & Epilogue by Robert Fogarty

American Utopias gives an intriguing look at America's many unique collective communities. This first-hand account was first published in 1875 while all the early major communities were still thriving, offering contemporary accounts of the Amana Society, the Shakers, Separatists of Zoar, the Oneida and Wallingford Perfectionists, the Aurora and bethel Communes, the Icarians, and many others.

Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) was a journalist, editor and author. Robert Fogarty is editor of The Antioch Review and author of books on Utopian communities.
