Immersion Travel USA

Volunteer Vacations Across America

Sheryl Kayne

The first travel book devoted to volunteer vacation opportunities within the United States

Author Sheryl Kayne profiles more than 200 volunteer programs throughout the U.S. for people of all ages and stages in life, highlighting the personal stories of volunteers and offering essential information on the programs. Immersion Excursions sections offer suggestions for side trips in the area and detail the best places to stay and visit.

Trips of varying lengths are appropriate for singles, couples, groups, families, children, teens, seniors, and people with special needs; they include working with people, communities, wildlife, the environment, and our national treasures. You might choose to rebuild a town that was devastated by a flood, volunteer on a nature preserve, educate national park visitors about Leave No Trace ethics, help to operate an organic farm, or tutor with an ESL group. Designed as a resource and idea book, this guide provides details on how to evaluate organizations, design or select your own volunteer vacation, develop a budget, and account for tax-deductible expenses.

Adventurer, writer, and educator Sheryl Kayne lectures and consults on immersion travel and volunteer excursions. The recipient of numerous awards for writing, she was most recently the writer-in-residence at Everglades National Park and a writing fellow at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. Her articles have been featured in USA Today, the New York Times, Shape, American Profile, Hadassah, and Parents magazine, and she has appeared on MTV, CNN, ABC Weekend Evening News, and NPR. Kayne lives in Weston, CT.
