2nd Edition

A Nature Lover's Guide to 36 Parks and Sanctuaries Just North of New York City

Katherine S. Anderson

Revised by Peggy Turco

Roosts of owls that never sleep, cathedral-like caves used by Native American tribes as Council Rocks, wild orchids, and the rare American lotus-all can be found within an hour of Manhattan.

This collection of "gentle walks" just north of New York City was enthusiastically received when first published in 1986. The late Katherine Anderson, an Audubon Society naturalist, spent 20 years working and walking in these parks and sanctuaries.

In 1992, Peggy Turco updated the descriptions to include new information on ecology, Indian place names, and culture. For this revised edition, she expands the territory from the shorelines of the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, and the woodlands of Westchester County to the Housatonic River, adding six new walks in Fairfield County.

The 36 trails described here also include:

  • Access directions

  • Easy-to-read maps

  • Mileage and approximate walking time
